Guwahati, April 12

Travel restrictions in many countries following the pandemic had played spoilsport for the Congress-led Mahajut candidates in Assam to fly abroad for a pleasure trip.

Fearing horse-trading by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the announcement of results of the tightly contested State Assembly election on May 2, the Congress-led alliance is taking all precautionary measures to keep away its potential winners out of BJP’s shadow. As part of the exercise, the candidates identified were shifted from Assam.

Getting an opportunity to have a luxurious stay for another 20 days, the candidates had proposed to fly abroad and enjoy leisure in the foreign countries. Bhutan, Singapore and Thailand were identified as the preferred place. A few local media even reported that candidates of Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) had been flown abroad over fears of being poached by the BJP.

“The reports are not true,” said Kampa Borgoyary, the former deputy chief of the Bodoland Territorial Council and party’s spokesman. According to him, those who have gone on a short “vacation” include 10 MCLAs and four MLA candidates.  They are in Sikkim and Goa, he said, adding that they will be back in a few days.

Besides BPF, about 20 candidates of the Congress-led alliance of Opposition parties in Assam were shifted to a luxury hotel near Jaipur on Friday.

Failing to fly to the foreign countries, the candidates are enjoying vacation in the enchanting domestic tourism destinations.
