Raipur, May 1

Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP), an arm of state-run Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), would set up jumbo facilities of 500 beds for COVID treatment with the support of gaseous oxygen to be brought from the plant through the pipelines.

Responding to the call of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and under the guidance of Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, SAIL’s Bhilai Steel Plant is planning to set up jumbo medical facilities of about 500 beds with the support of gaseous oxygen (GOX) for COVID treatment, the company spokesperson said. This would be in addition to the facilities currently available at Bhilai Steel Plant’s JLNH & RC.

In the first phase, it had planned to set up a 200 bed COVID Care centre at the Management Trainee Hostel No. 03 in Sector 03. The gaseous oxygen would be brought to the Hostel from the most suitable point in the Plant through pipelines. There would be around 50 beds in two halls and 150 beds in 75 rooms of the Hostel. The Centre is expected to be operational by the end of May 2021.

Creation of these facilities would not only boost the number of COVID beds available in the district but also preserve liquid medical oxygen (LMO), which could be transported to hospitals located away from plant locations.

The BSP had also procured five ventilators on emergency basis to supplement critical care facilities for COVID patients at Bhilai Steel Plant’s JLN Hospital & RC. The process of procurement of these additional 5 ventilators was fast tracked by Plant’s Materials Management department. The new ventilators were assembled today at the JLN Hospital & RC and installed in the ICUs.

With these new ventilators, the total number of ventilators in the hospital is now 24. In addition, the Hospital has 20 CPap and 10 bi-pap machines.
