Former Member of Parliament Jayant Chaudhary would carry forward the rich legacy of powerful Jat leader of Uttar Pradesh and former Prime Minister late Chaudhary Charan Singh.

Jayant was on Tuesday appointed as the new national president of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD). The election was necessitated following the demise of party president and his father Ajit Singh, who succumbed to COVID-19 on May 6.

The National Executive of the party met virtually today and took a unanimous decision to elected Jayant as party’s chief.

Jayant expressed gratitude to the party members and called on them to follow footsteps of party ideologues Chaudhary Charan Singh and Ajit Singh.

A postgraduate from the London School of Economics, Jayant had been familiar with the party functioning as he was involved in the affairs as vice president. His involvement increased since 2014 when his father Chaudhary Ajit Singh took a back seat after losing Baghpat Lok Sabha seat to the BJP.

The biggest challenge for the new RLD chief would be to energise the party cadre, taking forward the legacy of his grandfather – former Prime Minister and farmer leader Chaudhary Charan Singh – and regain west UP’s Jat vote bank which had decisively shifted towards the BJP in 2014 Lok Sabha elections following 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots.

Jayant electoral performance had not been encouraging as he lost his Mathura parliamentary seat to BJP’s Hema Malini in 2014 and then faced defeat in Baghpat in 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
