New Delhi, June 10

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath landed in New Delhi on a two-day visit reportedly to give final shape to the proposed cabinet reshuffle in the poll-bound state.

Ahead of Assembly elections scheduled in 2022, the ruling BJP in Uttar Pradesh had started the exercise to retain power despite batting on a tough wicket following COVID-19 crises. In the second wave, the state was in the focus with bodies reportedly thrown in the rivers.

The BJP high command had been playing cautiously. It would not give any room for the dissidents and hence, the party had planned a major reshuffle at the government and organisational level. Yogi Adityanath’s visit to the National Capital is seen in the context.

The Chief Minister held a 90-minute meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah this afternoon. He would meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief J P Nadda on Friday.

The visit comes a day after the BJP scored a high-profile recruit from the Congress, Jitin Prasada, a top Brahmin face in the state.

Many of the leaders had flagged issues like COVID-19 handling, disenchantment among people and lack of coordination between government and party leaders, among others that party high command had taken serious note of.

The Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections are scheduled to take place in 2022. BJP had registered a thumping come back to power in the state in 2017 Assembly polls, winning 309 seats of the 403 in the state. The SP bagged 49, BSP 18 and Congress 7.
