The increasing clout of Suvendu Adhikari in the Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) propelled party’s Vice President Mukul Roy to switchover to Trinamool Congress that he had left four years ago.

In a significant development in Bengal’s politics, BJP MLA Mukul Roy and his son Subhrangshu Roy joined the TMC today evening in presence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Trinamool Bhawan. “I could not work in BJP, which is why I have returned to the TMC,” Mukul Roy said.

Roy had contested the Assembly election from Krishnangar Uttar constituency and defeated TMC candidate actor Koushani Mukherjee.

The development had not come as a jolt to the BJP as the saffron party was prepared for his jumping the boat especially after Suvendu Adhikari was made the leader of opposition. Roy did not have fine tuning with most of the BJP leaders including state party President Dilip Ghosh.

Mukul Roy, the former lieutenant of Mamata Banerjee, who was also made Union Minister, had quit the TMC in 2017 over disagreements with the party’s top leadership on several issues, including differences with Abhishek Banerjee. Interestingly, Roy had return to TMC on the initiative of Abhishek Banerjee who had recently visited Mukul Roy’s ailing wife in hospital.
