Raipur, June 12

SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant has time and again maintained that the quality of water being supplied has been tested to be suitable and safe for consumption and the process of treatment of water is technically sound. Latest test results of water treated at the Plant’s Water Treatment Plant (WTP) have now once again established that the water treated at WTP is well within norms.

It may be noted that the issue of coloured water arose with poor quality of raw water coming from Tandula dam. This water that was yellow in colour got filled in the Plant’s Maroda reservoir. As the entire raw water was pigmented, the water at Maroda reservoir also became coloured. Despite concerted efforts by SAIL-BSP to resolve the issue of coloured water including dozing of chlorine, alum and filtration at the Plant’s Water Treatment Plant, the colour of water could not be improved. Technical experts were called in and dosing of additional chemicals was started.

Now with the Chhattisgarh government’s Water Resources Dept (WRD) having started supply of clean water from Gangrel instead of Tandula, the vexed issue of coloured potable water in Bhilai that has been troubling residents in the recent past has been resolved as there is now marked improvement in the colour of water.

As has been emphasised in the past, the process of treatment at the Plant’s Water Treatment Plant (WTP) is well within norms. There is technically no fault with the operations of treatment of water at WTP and the facility is perfectly capable of supplying clean and pure potable water to the township.

The fact that the root of the problem was poor quality of raw water being supplied from Tandula has been established now with the issue being resolved after WRD started supplying clean water from Gangrel. The colour of raw water supplied by WRD on 17th May 21 was 42 UTC which was brought down to 7 UTC after treatment at the BSP’s water treatment plant. Today on 11th June 21, the colour of raw water supplied by WRD was found to be 24 UTC which was brought down to 3 UTC at BSP’s WTP. This is well within the norms of 5 UTC. This is also the main reason why the colour of water is now clean.
The turbidity of raw water supplied by WRD on 17th May 21 was 17 JTU which was brought down to 2.9 JTU after treatment at the BSP’s water treatment plant. Today on 11th June 21, the turbidity of raw water supplied by WRD was found to be 9 JTU. After treatment at the BSP’s water treatment plant, the turbidity was brought down to 2.4 JTU which is well within the norms of 5 JTU.

The management of Bhilai Steel Plant has thanked the water resources dept of state government for having started supply of water from Gangrel instead of the pigmented water being supplied earlier from Tandula that has resulted in supply clean water.
