Hyderabad, June 27

Revanth Reddy, who has been appointed as Chief of Telangana Congress Committee, is no new to controversies and will face a daunting task to revive the party in the state.

All India Congress Committee today appointed Member of Parliament Revanth Reddy as the new Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) chief. Reddy’s name first figured in the infamous cash for vote scam. In 2015, he was accused of bribing a nominated MLA seeking support for TDP candidate in Legislative Council elections, the case was famously known as the cash for votes scam.

At the time, the incident rocked both the Telugu states, with TDP Chief and then-CM Chandrababu Naidu’s name coming into the picture. He was arrested by the state Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and jailed.

In 2018, Reddy lost the assembly election from Kodangal. In the general elections that followed a few months later, he won the Malkajgiri Parliament seat. In March 2020, Revanth was again arrested by Cyberabad police and jailed for recording visuals with a drone camera at a farmhouse allegedly owned by Minister KT Rama Rao in Janwada village on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

With roughly decade and half political life, Revanth had come from the grass root and had a considerable influence among a section. In a short span of time, he had become one of the tallest politicians with a sizable mass base and youth appeal.

The Congress now wants to regain its ground in Telangana by putting up a fight with TRS and by keeping a check on the new opposition BJP that is positioning itself as the strong alternative to KCR.

The foremost task before him would be to first keep its house in order.
