The opposition unity over Adani row received a big setback as Congress contested its Maharashtra ally Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on the issue.
NCP supremo Sharad Pawar had recently said that the Adani Group was seemingly targeted by the US-based short-seller Hindenburg Research. Pawar came out in support of the Adani Group and criticised the narrative around the Hindenburg Research’s report on the conglomerate. “Such statements were given by other individuals too earlier and there was a ruckus in Parliament for a few days but this time out-of-proportion importance was given to the issue,” he said
The Congress, NCP and the Shiv Sena led by Uddhav Thackeray are in an alliance in Maharashtra called the Maha Vikas Aghadi.
Disputing its ally, Congress said NCP might have its view but 19 like-minded Opposition parties are convinced that the charges against the conglomerate were real and very serious. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said all 20 like-minded Opposition parties, including the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), were united and will be together in saving the Constitution and democracy from the “BJP’s assaults”.
The Hindenburg Research has levelled allegations, including alleged fraudulent transactions and share-price manipulation, against the Adani Group, which has dismissed the charges as lies stating it complies with all laws and disclosure requirements.
While the opposition parties are trying to rake up the issue, its unity is still a pipe dream as two significant allies of the Opposition camp have confronting views on the issue.
