Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh stole the spotlight of Navjot Singh Sidhu’s swearing-in ceremony by organising a high-tea party ahead of the event.
Singh has invited all Congress MLAs, MPs and senior party functionaries at Punjab Bhawan for tea at 10 am on Friday. “They will all then go to Punjab Congress Bhawan together from there for the installation of the new PPCC team,” a close aide of Punjab Chief Minister said.
The invitation had been distributed to the guests. Amarinder Singh had accepted an invitation from Navjot Sidhu and had agreed to attend his elevation ceremony as Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief. Navjot Singh Sidhu will formally take over as the state Congress chief on Friday.
Sidhu and Amarinder Singh had been at loggerheads for the past some time and the spat had spilled out in the open. Singh had earlier said that he would not meet Sidhu until he repented for the derogatory comments that he passed on him. The Punjab Chief Minister is learnt to have set aside the simmering differences with the new party chief for now.
But it would be he who would bat first. Sidhu had tried to mobilise the party’s elected representatives. Now, they would first come to the party hosted by Singh and then move to the function of Sidhu.
