The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 finally came to an end on Sunday at Lusail Stadium after a month of exhilaration and excitement after Argentina trounced defending champion France by 4-2 in a penalty shootout.
Under the captaincy of magical Lionel Messi, who scored two goals in the finals, Argentina won the World Cup final for the third time. This was the third time that the FIFA WC final was decided in a penalty shootout following Italy vs Brazil in 1994 and France vs Italy in 2006.
FIFA World Cup 2022 started on 20th November with a match between host Qatar and Ecuador. A total of 32 teams participated in the tournament and 64 matches were played.
The World Cup champions Argentina has taken home $42 million (Rs 350 crore) in prize money while the runner-up France has received $30 million (Rs 250 crore) from a FIFA prize fund of $440 million (Rs 3200 crore). On the other hand, FIFA have earned whooping $7.5 billion from the 2022 World Cup cycle. Of the earning, 65 to 70 per cent came from broadcast and media rights. The rest of the monies were earned via sponsorship deals, plus ticket and hospitality sales.
Croatia and Morocco, who are vying for the third spot stand to make $27 million or Rs 220 crore. The team coming in fourth gets $25 million or Rs 204 crore.
Meanwhile, Argentina erupts in celebration of World Cup win. Streets of central Buenos Aires are a cacophony of yelling and horns after shootout victory against France.
