Team News Riveting
Kochi, February 9
The Army on Wednesday rescued a trekker who got trapped in a fault line of the Koormbachi hillock in Palakkad district of Kerala on February 7.
“In a daring mission, Indian Army Team from the Southern Command has rescued the stranded trekker, Babu to safety from the dangerous cliff, across the treacherous rocky mountain face,” Indian Army said in a tweet.
The Southern Command said in another tweet that in a spectacular action, highly qualified teams of Indian Army had successfully rescued Babu who slipped off a cliff and was stranded in a steep gorge in Malampuzha mountains for over 48 hours. The operation was coordinated by the Dakshin Bharat Area under the aegis of the Southern Command.
Babu, 23, along with three of his friends, had climbed the hillock and while coming down, he slipped and fell into the fault line, on Monday afternoon. Earlier, Kerala’s rescue teams failed to lift the trekker to safety even after a 40-hour operation. Subsequently, the Army and Air Force help were sought.
On Tuesday, an Indian Coast Guard’s Chetak helicopter attempted the rescue operations, but, due to inclement weather, was unable to complete the operation.
As he was rescued, a video surfaced online showing the 23-year-old man kissing Indian Army personnel and chanting “Indian Army Ki Jai.”
Babu was trapped in the gorge without food and water for two days. Soon after evacuating, he was shifted to a government hospital.
