Kochi, January 6
Left activist Bindhu Ammini, who breached the established tradition of Lord Ayyappa and became the first woman with Kanaka Durga of mensurating age to enter the Holy Sabarimala shrine, was attacked by a man in Kozhikode on Wednesday.
In the visuals that went viral, a man in a shirt and mundu is seen grabbing her and beating her. This is not the first time she has been facing wrath of Ayyappa devotees; she has been attacked earlier also for hurting the sentiments of millions of Ayyappan devotees.
She along with Durga dodged the protesters in 2019 and entered the shrine on January 2, 2019 following an apex court order that allowed women of all age groups to enter Sabrimala—breaking the rich tradition of the temple. Bindhu has been associated with the CPI (ML), a Left-wing party. Interestingly, another Left party CPM is in power in Kerala but the activist feels the state is worse than Uttar Pradesh where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is in power.
While talking to a television channel, she said she had not faced such attacks even in Uttar Pradesh when she had visited many times and had been identified to the local people. “I am not safe here anymore. What I have decided is to leave the country and take asylum,” she said.
Call it her fate, the Left activist has to launch an attack against the government of her ideology. “Police have always taken a stand to protect them (the culprits). Every time they take my statement and stop with that. I can’t say that the police are inactive; they are active but to save the culprits,” she said.
