Bharat Aluminium Company (BALCO) Limited would enhance the capacity of its smelter plant located in Chhattisgarh’s Korba district.
The Board of Directors of the Vedanta Limited that owns 51 per cent stake in BALCO, had approved the plan at its meeting held today. The Government of India holds the remaining 49 per cent share in the company.
In a regulatory filing today, Vedanta Limited said the board had approved to expand BALCO’s smelter capacity by 414 KTPA (kilo tonne per annum) subject to requisite Government approvals. At present, the company facility in Korba has a smelter capacity of 570 KTPA with capabilities to produce ingots, Alloy ingots, wire-rods, busbars and rolled products.
The expansion plan would entail an investment of Rs 6611 crore, the company said, adding that it includes investment made to build new township for improved safety and security. The plan will help to reach 92 per cent VAP portfolio at location.
The Jharsuguda’s Carbon Plant Adequacy Business will set up a new Carbon facility at a cost Rs 635 crore instead of debottlenecking (approved in May 2021 as part of 100 KTPA Rs 210 crore) for sustaining reliability and catering anode for 1.78 MTPA with future scalability to 2 MTPA.
