It was not the usual “encounter” that security forces taking on Maoists in the Bastar jungles had been prepared for. Saving two lives in the pocket tucked unobtrusively in Chhattisgarh was another commendable and humanity gesture of the security personnel.

Screaming in labour pain and struggling to get to the nearest hospital, Kurma Nande of village Rewali Patelpara in Dantewada district had never imagined security forces would appear as her saviour and the baby in her womb. When the pain started and the 35-year-old wife of Kurma Deva became restless, the family members rang for emergency ambulance service.

Unfortunately, the ambulance could not reach as the Maoists had committed an inhuman act and cut the road leading to the village. By that time, Nande’s health was fast deteriorating. The helpless villagers made the cot a stretcher and started trekking when the jawans of the District Reserve Guard (DRG), drawn from the Chhattisgarh police, spotted them. The brave DRG men took it upon themselves to play the role of saviour.

They carried the woman on a stretcher for kilometers and brought to the main road where a patrol vehicle of the security force was lined up to rush her to the nearest hospital. The timely action of the DRG jawans facilitated Nande to reach Palnar Health Center where she gave birth to a healthy baby boy. The condition of both mother and infant is reported to be normal.

The family members saluted the spirit of the jawans who saved their lives.

Bastar Inspector General of Police Sundarraj P said just for their existence, the banned and illegal CPI(Maoist) organization had deprived the local villagers of better roads, bridges, culverts, electricity supply, educational and basic facilities like health care for the last four decades. “While the security forces have been foiling the plot of the Maoists, the Bastar Police and security forces deployed in the area are continuously working in the public interest by risking their lives to bring about a positive change in the standard of living of the people,” he said.

Sundarraj said they were confident to cherish the dreams of people and eliminate the Left-Wing Extremists soon so that denizens could live with peace and create a new identity for their region.
