Bhilai Steel Plant’s Blast Furnace 8 becomes fastest in SAIL to crosses 13 MT milestone

SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant’s largest Blast Furnace – Blast Furnace 8 (BF 8), christened Mahamaya has become the fastest in SAIL to have crossed the 13 million tonnes (MT) cumulative production of hot metal.

According to Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) spokesperson, the milestone was achieved on September 7, 2023.   BF 8 has recorded the fastest hot metal Production rate for achieving 13 MT of HM Production milestone with other sister unit similar capacity furnace.

Earlier, BF 8 had become the fastest in SAIL to have cross the 1 MT, 2 MT, 3 MT and 4 MT cumulative production milestones. After the blowing in of BF 8 on February 2, 2018, the first hot metal flew from the 2.8 MTPA Blast Furnace 8 on February 4, 2018.

In April 2021, Blast Furnace 8 of SAIL- Bhilai Steel Plant, a Modex unit, has once again created history by achieving the 7 MT cumulative hot metal production in record 1179 days, thereby becoming the fastest among SAIL’s other large furnaces of similar capacity in sister units. The 7MT milestone was achieved by BF 8 in B shift of April 26, April 2021.

BF 8 achieved the milestone 5 months and 13 days before similar furnace in Rourkela Steel Plant and 9 months, and 15 days before similar capacity furnace in IISCO Steel Plant, Burnpur.
