On Tuesday, Kartik Kumar was expected to surrender before the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate at Danapur 8 km west of Raj Bhawan, where the RJD leader was taking oath as minister and was later allotted the portfolio of law.
On July 16, court had issued a warrant of arrest against the law maker and had asked Mokamah police station in Patna district to arrest the minister and produce him before the court, where he was facing trial in a kidnapping case registered under sections 34,363,364 of IPC in 2007. He is alleged to have kidnapped a leading builder.
According to the police, Kartik Kumar had approached Patna High Court in 2017 for quashing of FIR, but it was rejected and he was asked to surrender before the court subordinate.
As he failed to appear in court, a warrant of arrest was issued against him.
Sushil Kumar Modi, former Deputy Chief Minister alleged Kartik was made minister on recommendation of RJD President Lalu Prasad. He asked the Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar to immediately dismiss the law minister.
Senior BJP leader claimed 40 per cent of the ministers from RJD quota have criminal antecedents with charges of murder, rape, kidnapping.
Jeetan Ram Manjhi in 2005, Ramanand Prasad Singh in 2010 and Mewalal Chaudhury in 2020 sacked within three days of swearing in as ministers following revelation of criminal cases pending against them.
Meanwhile, Kartik Kumar alleged he was not aware of the case and the controversy was politically motivated.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed ignorance about arrest warrant against the law minister. Hamko nahi pata, hamko kisi tarah ki jaankari nahi hai (I have no idea, I have no information), he told media persons at Bihar Vidhan Parishad.a
Law minister was charged with abducting a leading builder, Rajiv Ranjan at Bihta in 2007.
