Tension mounted in certain sectors of Chhattisgarh capital Raipur on Friday as activists of Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) clashed after the Lok Sabha Secretariat disqualified Rahul Gandhi’s membership following his conviction in a Surat court of law.
The Wayanad Member of Parliament, Rahul Gandhi was sentenced to two years imprisonment by a Surat court of law in a criminal defamation case related to his comment on Modi surname. Following the established norms, the Lok Sabha Secretariat on Friday issued the notification to disqualify his membership from the lower House of Parliament.
After the news broke, hundreds of Congress workers stormed into the BJP office Ekatma Parisar in the heart of the state capital. The workers created ruckus and blackened the posters carrying pictures of senior BJP leaders. The limited workers present in the BJP office had a skirmish that created tension in the area dominated by the business facilities. The police reached the spot and anyhow brought the escalating situation under control.
Meanwhile, when the report of attack in the BJP office went viral, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), reached the Congress headquarters and reportedly pelted stones. The BJYM had a scheduled protest in front of a minister’s house over another issue. When they came to know about the incident, they straight away went to the Rajiv Bhawan.
Spotting the BJYM workers, the security personnel in the Congress headquarters closed the main gate while additional force was rushed in. Sources said the Congress workers on the spot retaliated and a clash broke out on the main street. The police had to block vehicular movement on the main road.
The BJYM District President along with a few other workers reportedly suffered head injury during the fight.
Additional force had been deployed in the sensitive points in the capital city to avert any untoward incident.
