BJP fields ex MLA who jumped into river to save lives in Gujarat’s Morbi

Former MLA in Gujarat Kantilal Amratiya, who jumped into Machchhu River to save lives after bridge collapse tragedy, has been fielded by the BJP for the assembly polls in the state. 

The BJP on Thursday announced the list of 160 candidates out of 182 for the forthcoming Gujarat Assembly Elections 2022. The party expressed confidence on 69 sitting MLAs and fielded them to contest the ensuing assembly elections.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Bhai Patel will contest from Ghatlodiya constituency while Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi will try his electoral fate from Majura constituency.

The party has given ticket to Kantilal Amratiya from Morbi.  On October 30, the British-era bridge collapsed and over 500 people plunged into the river. Kantilal reached the spot and jumped into the river to save lives. A video on social media featured him swimming toward the middle of the river where the bridge had collapsed.

An RSS activist, Kantilal Amritya, was born on 8 March 1962 in a middle-class Patel community at Jetpar in Morbi district. Even as a young boy in the 1970s, he served in the rehabilitation of victims during the floods caused by the failure of the Morbi Dam.

He completed his schooling at VC Technical High School, Morbi. As a young man, he joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, a student organization, and became involved in the anti-corruption Navnirman movement. After working as a full-time member of the organization, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Hardik Patel, who quit Congress and the BJP, would contest from Viramgam. The party has given ticket to Kumar Kanani to contest from Varachha while Cricketer Ravindrasinh jadeja’s wife Rivaba Jadeja will contest from Jamnagar North constituency.
