Professor Afzal Hashmi, state spokesman of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was shot at in the premises of J R S College at Jamal, 200 kms east of Patna on Wednesday morning.
Police have arrested college principal Lallan Prasad Singh on the basis of a statement given by the BJP leader.
Manavjeet Singh Dhillon, district SP of Munger said the BJP leader is also a teacher in the college and has gone to engage classes at 11.15 am. As he came out of the car driven by his driver, three miscreants who were apparently waiting for him fired three bullets; two of which hit the Professor.
According to the SP, who rushed to Sadar Hospital of Munger where BJP leader was rushed by the driver in his vehicle, said there was a dispute between the victim and the principal. It turned violent on Monday when Lallan Prasad Singh, principal threatened him (Hashmi) with dire consequences. There was some issue of taking over charge from the acting principal, according to the SP.
After preliminary treatment, Hashmi was rushed to Patna where he was admitted in a private hospital on Bailey Road. Ashok Bhatt, media in-charge of the BJP told this paper that surgery had been performed to extricate the bullets.
Sanjay Jaiswal, state BJP president, expressed concern over the incident and regretted that the BJP leader was shot at in broad daylight in the college premises. He talked to the Director General of Police, S K Singhal,and asked him to ensure the criminals were arrested immediately.
Senior BJP leaders called on the family members of Shamsi and assured the shooters would be nabbed soon. They also visited the hospital, where the BJP leader is admitted.
This was the second major incident of broad daylight shootout in Bihar this month. Rupesh Kumar Singh, station manager of a private airlines was shot dead near his residence here two weeks back. No arrest had been made so far.
