The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today raised the issue of Rohingyas refugees’ name in the electoral list.

West Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh on Thursday called on the full bench of Election Commission of India (ECI) and alleged that names of 4-5 lakh Rohingyas were part of the voters’ list. Ghosh said that he had complained before the ECI that its officials should verify the list wherever the number of voters had increased “unexpectedly.”

The full bench of the ECI is in Bengal on a two-day visit to oversee poll preparedness.

Trinamool Congress leader Partha Chatterjee contested the claim of the BJP and said that the voters’ list was prepared by the EC and by making the allegation, the BJP state chief was trying to intimidate the ECI authorities. “He is pressurising the ECI and attempting to create an atmosphere of terror and fear where ordinary people can’t peacefully go out to vote and neither can the ECI officials conduct elections fearlessly,” Chatterjee added.

Later in the day, ECI officials met with senior police officials and administrative officers of the State government on the law-and-order situation. The ECI officials stressed on the execution of all pending arrest warrants in the State before the elections are held.
