New Delhi, July 4

Gearing up for the 2024 general elections and assembly polls in a few states later in the year, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) kick started its long-anticipated party overhaul, appointing new chiefs in Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Jharkhand.

Jharkhand BJP will be headed by tribal strongman and first Chief Minister of the state Babulal Marandi while Duggubati Purandeshwari will be the new chief of Andhra Pradesh BJP. She is daughter of Telugu Desam Party and former Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh N T Rama Rao. She will relinquish responsibility as national general secretary of the BJP.

Former Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar, who switched over to the saffron camp in May last year, has been named Punjab unit president replacing Ashwani Sharma. The BJP has also replaced Bandi Sanjay as Telangana unit president appointing G Kishan Reddy in his place. Reddy is Member of Parliament and Union Minister.

The BJP has given signals with the overhaul that a massive revamp of the party and government was on the card. It can be substantiated with the shifting of a union minister and a national general secretary as to the states of Telangana and Andhra respectively.

The BJP has called a meeting of all the state presidents, state general secretaries, and state in-charges on July 7. BJP president JP Nadda and National General Secretary BL Santosh will preside over this meeting.

The union cabinet meeting is also likely to be held at 10.30 am tomorrow, BJP sources said.
