The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has recorded a historic win in the civic body elections in Chhattisgarh.
The party has bagged all the 10 Municipal Corporations and Mayoral position in the state. Unlike last term, direct election was held to elect Mayor. In the last tenure, the ruling-Congress party had changed the norms that ensure indirect election with corporators nominating the Mayor.
The voting was held in 10 municipal corporations on 11 February. It included Ambikapur, Korba, Chirmiri, Jagdalpur, Durg, Dhamtari, Bilaspur, Rajnandgaon, Raigarh and Raipur Municipal Corporations. In all, 79 mayor candidates were in the fray in the municipal corporation elections. Besides, elections were also held for the 49 municipal councils and 114 nagar panchayats.
The BJP recorded a landslide victory in Raipur Municipal Corporation (RMC); forming the urban government after a span of 15 years. Its candidate Meenal Choubey trounced Congress’ Dipti Dubey by a margin of over 146,559 votes.
The sitting Mayor, Aijaz Dhebar lost the election as ward corporator candidate.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said, “Today is a historic day for BJP and the BJP government in Chhattisgarh. We can say that this day will be written in golden letters in the political history of Chhattisgarh because BJP has achieved a historic victory in the municipal elections. The voters here have placed their trust in BJP.”
