Captain Amarinder Singh’s Punjab Lok Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has formed an alliance to fight the 2022 assembly elections in Punjab.
“Met union minister & @BJP4India incharge for Punjab, Shri @gssjodhpur in New Delhi today to chalk out future course of action ahead of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha elections. We have formally announced a seat adjustment with the BJP for the 2022 Punjab Vidhan Sabha elections,” former Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh said in a tweet.
Gajendra Shekhawat, BJP’s Punjab in-charge also confirmed the alliance.
“Today, I want to make it clear that the BJP and Amarinder Singh will contest assembly elections in Punjab together and we are working together,” Shekhawat told reporters. Amarinder Singh was also present. The details of seat-sharing will be announced at an “appropriate time,” he added.
“The alliance will definitely, 101 per cent win the elections. And winnability will be the main criterion in finalising seats,” Singh said. Elections for Punjab’s 117 assembly seats are due early next year.
Singh stepped down as Chief Minister of Punjab in September following his differences with Punjab Congress Chief Navjot Singh Sidhu. Singh then resigned from the Congress party and floated his own outfit.
While launching the party, he had said that his outfit was open to an alliance with the BJP for the 2022 assembly elections provided Centre resolved the farmers crisis over the controversial agriculture laws. The Parliament has recently passed legislation repealing the three laws that had led the Shiromani Akali Dal, BJP’s old partner in Punjab, to exit the alliance.
