While the Congress led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) is desperate to regain ground in Assam by wooing Muslim votes, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) had got the “mandate”” to retain power in Assam.
The BJP-led alliance is set to bag 73-81 seats in the upcoming Assembly polls, says a survey conducted by ABP-C Voter.
The pre-poll prediction said that the BJP led-Assam government would comfortably cross the magic number of 63 while UPA was projected to win around 36-44 seatsThe survey added that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) along with its allied regional party- Asom Gana Parishad, United People’s Party Liberal and Gana Suraksha Party was set to secure a strong foothold in the state of Assam.
The ABP-C Voter projected vote share for different parties that included 43 per cent for the NDA, 35 per cent for UPA, 8 per cent for AIDUF and 14 per cent for others. The UPA led by the Congress would be desperate to regain its lost hold in Assam and would rope in Left parties. The Congress party was in talk with Badruddin Ajmal’s All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) that commanded a significant support base among the Muslims population.
Currently, the BJP has 60 MLAs, while its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and BPF have 14 and 12 lawmakers respectively in the House of 126. The opposition Congress has 23 MLAs, while the AIUDF has 14 members. The BJP led Assam government is confident to win over 100 seats in the upcoming Assam assembly elections. The state is likely to go to the polls in md of the year.
The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sunil Arora is arriving here on a three-day visit to take stock of preparations for assembly polls. The CEC will be accompanied by Election Commissioners Sushil Chandra and Rajiv Kumar besides top officials.
