The Blast Furnace – 1, Parvati of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) that was re-commissioned after up-gradation on May 9, 2018, has surpassed the 3 Million Tonnes (MT) mark in Hot Metal production on March 21, 2022.
Atanu Bhowmick, Director In-Charge visited the Department and congratulated the larger Blast Furnace collective on this commendable performance and cut the cake to mark the occasion. The DIC was accompanied by A K Kundu, ED (Mines), S R Suryawanshi, ED (Works), P K Satapathy, ED (P&A), C R Mohapatra, CGM Incharge (MM & Marketing), several other Chief General Managers and Senior Officers of the Plant .
Bhowmick appreciated the collective effort of the Department and the support of associated Departments for the success. He encouraged all to work consistently and recreate new records with utmost safety so as to keep the flag of RSP fly high.
Notably, the upgraded BF-1 and its peripheral facilities are designed to achieve average hot metal production of 2900 Ton per day. Post upgradation, it achieved hot metal production of 1 MT on October 13, 2019 and 2 MT on February 3, 2020. However, the production from the furnace had to be throttled for 1 months due to Covid -19 pandemic in 2020.
The upgraded Blast Furnace-1 has several new and modern facilities including the free standing design of the furnace supported by 4-poster columns, flat cast houses with hot metal and slag runners suitable for higher hot metal production, new probes with temperature sensors, 3 Hot blast system of Mushroom dome design with Waste Gas heat recovery system for recovering heat from the waste gases, new tuyere stock assemblies with double expansion joints, tuyere cooler suitable for 1200 Degree Centigarde Hot Blast Temperature, closed loop cooling system with soft water , cast house de-fuming system etc that have played a key role in enhancing the production capacity of the furnace.
