Blaze kills 11 migrant workers from Bihar in Hyderabad

Eleven persons were charred to death in a devastating fire that broke out at a scrap godown here in the early hours of Wednesday.

The deceased, all migrant workers from Bihar, who were sleeping on the first floor of the building located in Bhoiguda area of the city and could not save themselves as there was only one internal spiral staircase, police sources said. One person managed to survive after he broke a window in order to escape. He is currently in critical condition at Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad.

The 11 people were charred beyond recognition. The fire control room received a call around 3 am and the fire fighters had to battle with the blaze for about four hours before it was brought under control.

According to the police officials, the bodies of the deceased were retrieved from the wreckage and shifted to Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad. A DNA test will be conducted to identify the victims.

Ten of the eleven migrant workers who died were from Azampura village in Bihar. They had been working at the godown for the last a year and a half ago.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao expressed shock over the incident and announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh each for the families of the deceased.
