In a major security breach, a mentally ill youth attacked Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in his hometown Bakhtiyarpur today.

The man, who was caught on CCTV camera during the attack, walked penetrating the security ring of the Chief Minister and attacked Kumar when he was about to pay tributes to Shilbhadra Yaji, a noted freedom fighter from the state, at his memorial located in local Safar hospital complex.

The security personnel in the ring round of the Chief Minister, the inner layer of the security cover, also did not try to intercept the youth as he walked through them. The man, who came from behind, walked up the dais in rapid steps and hit Kumar.

He was immediately dragged off by the security personnel. The youth was identified as Shankar Kumar Verma alias Chottu (32), a resident of Abu Mahmadpur of Bakhtiyarpur. He owns a jewellery shop.

After the preliminary investigation, the Patna Police said the man had been mentally unstable. He was mostly kept confined at home by his family but managed to sneak out today as most of the male members of the family were out.

The police registered a case against the youth. The Chief Minister however directed the police not to take any action and free the youth. Even when the security personnel nabbed him on the spot, Kumar told them “Do not beat him. First find out what he is saying.”

The senior officers are however investigating the lapse on the security of the Chief Minister.
