A Maharashtra state transport corporation plunged into Narmada River on the border of Khargone and Dhar districts of Madhya Pradesh today morning.
The ill-fated bus was reportedly carrying 55 passengers when the driver lost control over the steering and the vehicle broke the railing at Khalghat bridge. The bus was going from Indore to Amalner in Maharashtra.
Soon after getting information about the incident that took place at around 7 am, the senior officials of the civil and police administration reached the spot along with the disaster management team. Khargone-Dhar District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police personally monitored the operation.
SP Khargone Dharamveer Singh said that 12 bodies had been fished out so far. About a dozen passengers had been rescued while search for the remaining were on.
Sources quoting the passengers said that the bus did not fall directly into the river. It first hit the rocks after plunging and turned turtle in the overflowing river.
The Madhya Pradesh government has announced a relief amount of Rs 4 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased.
The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has expressed deep grief over the loss of lives due to a bus tragedy in Dhar, Madhya Pradesh.
The Prime Minister’s Office tweeted; “The bus tragedy in Dhar, Madhya Pradesh is saddening. My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones. Rescue work is underway and local authorities are providing all possible assistance to those affected: PM”
The Prime Minister has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each from Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of those who lost their lives due to the bus tragedy in Dhar, Madhya Pradesh. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000.
