The BJP is working on a new strategy to take on Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal; delay the due Assembly by-elections in the state.
Citing the COVID-19 and the possible third wave in next few months, the BJP is pulling all the strings to delay the Assembly by-elections in seven constituencies of West Bengal. By postponing the elections, the BJP is designing a new tactics to take on Mamata Banerjee who inflicted a major jolt to the saffron party in the May state polls.
Mamata had lost to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari from the Nandigram Assembly seat in the Assembly elections, the counting of which took place on May 2. She was appointed as the Chief Minister and took oath on May 5 despite not being a member of the State Legislative Assembly.
As per the constitutional provisions, she had to get elected to the House within six months failing which she had to resign from the post. The time ends on November 5.
The West Bengal BJP is strongly opposing the Assembly by-elections in the state and wanted it to be delayed. State BJP president Dilip Ghosh had been stressing that Assembly by-polls should only be held only after the polls in 122 municipalities in Bengal.
TMC is however that the Election Commission of India (ECI), which had come under scathing attack of Mamata Banerjee during the state polls, would dare to delay the by-election. But still, it had planned to counter the BJP strategy.
If the BJP succeeded in its strategy, TMC planned to play the sympathy card for Mamata and grill the poll panel and also the Centre for once against “targeting” the Trinamool Chief.
