New Delhi, September 30
Octogenarian former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Thursday announced he was severing his 41 years old attachment with the Congress.
Singh has tendered his resignation on September 18 as Chief Minister of Punjab following indications from the Congress high command. The party leadership promoted Navjot Singh Sidhu who launched a crusade against him. Finally, Sidhu has put the party in an embarrassing position by resigning from the State Congress President post on Tuesday.
“I won’t join the BJP but will leave the Congress after suffering humiliation in the party,” Singh said speaking to reporters at the residence of his wife and Patiala MP Preneet Kaur in the national capital. Singh is on New Delhi visit and the political corridor has been rife with speculations of his joining the saffron camp.
The former Punjab Chief Minister however put the speculations at rest but came out with the shocking disclosure of leaving Congress that will cast an adverse impact for the party in poll-bound Punjab. The state is going to the polls in another six months.
However, Singh met Union Home Minister Amit Shah. But the discussion was reportedly to be largely on national security on the backdrop of Sidhu’s coming at the helm of affairs in the sensitive state bordering Punjab. The agenda of the meeting could be established as Singh met National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on Thursday.
Singh also confirmed his meeting with Doval and said he flagged the precarious security situation in Punjab where Pakistan was sending weapons on drones.
“Some drones and weapons have been intercepted but not all. So, who has got hold of them? I may not be the CM but the state is our own and we can’t have it suffer again. It has already suffered terrorism once,” said Singh.
After the meeting with Singh that lasted for over 30 minutes, Doval drove to Amit Shah’s residence.
