CBI books “crorepati” audit officer in Chhattisgarh

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case against a senior audit officer posted at the office of Principal Accountant General (Audit) at Raipur in Chhattisgarh for amassing assets beyond known source of income

The officer has been identified as Virendra Kumar Patel. The CBI charged that Patel joined that service as SO on July 13, 2006 on a pay scale of Rs 4,800. After joining the job, he reportedly invested in real estate properties in the form of agricultural land, residential plots per year. The preliminary investigation and search revealed that he had purchased over 10 properties.

The agency alleged that the accused was indulging in corrupt activities and knowingly engaged in criminal misconduct to enrich himself wrongfully and amassed huge wealth beyond his known sources of income. The accused allegedly transferred immovable and movable properties worth Rs 3,89,53,980 in the name of himself and his wife during the period from 31.08.2007 to 31.05.2024.

The CBI also charged that during the period of investigation from 31.08.2007 to 31.05.2024, the disproportionate assets (DA) of the accused in excess of income was Rs 1,47,50,143.

The agency on Monday conducted search operations at three places including residential and office premises of Patel. The preliminary probe has revealed that the audit officer has amassed properties worth crores of rupees during his service period.
