Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), a Jharkhand-based subsidiary of Coal India Limited, has scripted a new chapter in its illustrious journey by achieving record-breaking performance in coal production and dispatch during the financial year 2024–25.
The company produced a total of 87.5 million tonnes (MT) of coal—the highest ever annual production since its inception. In parallel, CCL dispatched 85.9 MT of coal, marking another historic milestone.
The landmark achievement is a testament to CCL’s unwavering commitment towards meeting the nation’s growing energy needs and advancing the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. Major coal-producing areas such as Amrapali-Chandragupta, Barka Sayal, Magadh-Sanghamitra, Piparwar, North Karanpura, Rajrappa, and Rajhara played pivotal roles in not only achieving high output but also ensuring quality coal dispatch.
In line with its strong environmental ethos, CCL undertook extensive afforestation activities across its operational areas in Jharkhand during FY 2024–25. Notably, in the Rajrappa area, the company implemented the Miyawaki plantation technique, a modern method to develop dense forests in a short time span, aimed at enhancing green cover and restoring ecological balance in mining-affected areas.
As part of its commitment to clean and sustainable energy, CCL generated 287.9 lakh units of solar power, resulting in a reduction of 20,153 tonnes of CO₂ emissions. The company currently operates 1.25 MW of rooftop solar capacity and 24 MW of ground-mounted solar power projects (20 MW in Piparwar and 4 MW in Giridih). Additionally, another 2.05 MW of rooftop capacity was commissioned during the year. A 5 MW solar power project is under construction in the Barka Sayal Area and is expected to be commissioned in FY 2025–26. Furthermore, land has been identified in the Giridih Area for a proposed 150 MW solar project, slated for completion by FY 2026–27. CCL has set an ambitious target to achieve net-zero electricity consumption by the year 2029–30.
To make coal dispatch more efficient and environmentally sustainable, CCL is implementing fully mechanized, closed-loop Coal Handling Plants (CHPs). CHPs under construction include Karo CHP, Konar CHP, and KBP-Purnadih CHP, while North Urimari CHP is already operational. These mechanized systems eliminate the need for road transport, thereby reducing diesel consumption, dust emissions, and vehicular pollution. These efforts, under the able leadership of Shri Nilendu Kumar Singh, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, are part of CCL’s broader strategy to adopt advanced technologies for sustainable coal logistics.
Marking a major stride in public healthcare, CCL is setting up a 200-bed Super Specialty Hospital in Kanke, Ranchi, focusing on cardiology, pulmonology, and neurology. The company has signed a MoU with Babasaheb Ambedkar Vaidyakiya Pratishthan for the establishment of this state-of-the-art facility, which will provide high-quality treatment to the public at concessional rates. The foundation stone for the hospital was laid by the Union Minister of Coal, G Kishan Reddy, underlining the government’s commitment to inclusive development in coal-bearing regions.
CCL continued its impactful work under CSR, focusing on education, sports, healthcare, and women empowerment. Through flagship initiatives like ‘CCL ke Laal’ and ‘CCL ki Laadli’, the company offers free IIT coaching, schooling, lodging, and boarding facilities to meritorious students from marginalized coalfield communities. Currently, 80 students are benefitting from these programmes.
The company also runs the Jharkhand Sports Promotion Society (JSSPS) in partnership with the State Government, providing residential training in 11 sports disciplines. Cadets from the academy have won accolades at national and international platforms, bringing pride to the state and the country.
As a Ni-Kshay Mitra, CCL has adopted 100% TB patients from aspirational districts like Chatra and Latehar, contributing significantly to the national TB eradication mission. A collaboration with the Sri Sathya Sai Health and Education Trust has enabled screening and corrective surgeries for 500 children with congenital heart conditions.
The company has also set up Smart Classes and ICT labs in 193 government schools and imparted skill development training to 1,251 youth in various trades, with over 900 gaining employment. Health camps conducted throughout the year benefitted nearly 2 lakh rural citizens. Under its livelihood initiative, women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) were supported in running handloom units, mushroom cultivation, and garment production centers.
CCL’s contribution transcends coal mining—it plays a crucial role in energizing India and transforming lives. With a focus on technology adoption, safety innovation, environmental stewardship, and social equity, CCL is emerging as a model enterprise in the Indian energy sector.
Nilendu Kumar Singh, Chairman-cum-Managing Director of CCL, said “CCL is fully committed to ensuring India’s energy security. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Central Government, State Government, especially the Ministry of Coal, our workforce, villagers, and all stakeholders for their guidance and cooperation. Our priority is not just coal production, but inclusive development, environmental preservation, and empowering the last mile of society.”
CCL’s historic performance in FY 2024–25 is a milestone for both Jharkhand and India’s energy ecosystem, reaffirming its pivotal role in achieving the goals of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
