Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL), has signed a landmark contract agreement for the development of the New Kathara Coking Coal Washery under the Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model.

This marks the first project within CIL to be executed on the BOO concept and aligns with CCL’s mission to enhance coal quality, ensure the supply of superior quality indigenous washed coking coal to the nation’s energy and metallurgical sectors, and reduce dependence on imported coking coal.

The contract was officially signed on 10th July 2025 between CCL and M/s Global Coal and Mining Pvt. Ltd. (GCML), a reputed firm with proven expertise in coal beneficiation infrastructure. The agreement was executed by Suresh Talankar, General Manager, Coal Washery Construction Division, and Sanjay Kumar, General Manager, Kathara Area, on behalf of CCL, and by the Managing Director of GCML.

The formal signing ceremony was graced by Nilendu Kumar Singh, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, CCL; Pawan Kumar Mishra, Director (Finance), CCL; and Harsh Nath Mishra, Director (Personnel), CCL.

The New Kathara Coking Coal Washery is planned to be constructed in the Kathara Area of Bokaro district in Jharkhand, with a proposed capacity of 3.00 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA). The project, valued at approximately Rs 380 crore, forms a significant component of CCL’s ongoing modernization and capacity expansion strategy.

Once operational, the washery is expected to bring about substantial improvements in the quality of raw coal extracted from the region by reducing ash content and enhancing its suitability for steel manufacturing. This development is also projected to generate employment opportunities locally and contribute to the socio-economic development of the region.

The signing and implementation of this agreement have been carried out under the guidance of Shri Shankar Nagarchi, Director Technical (Project & Planning), and Shri Chandrashekhar Tiwari, Director Technical (Operations), CCL

The project is slated for completion within 36 months and will be implemented under the Build-Own-Operate model.

Speaking on the occasion, Nilendu Kumar Singh, CMD, CCL, stated: “The New Kathara Washery Project is a testimony to our sustained commitment to improve coal quality, enhance operational efficiency, and deliver value to our stakeholders. The facility will also promote local employment and play a crucial role in the socio-economic upliftment of the area. This initiative aligns with the Government of India’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and the broader objectives of self-reliance in coking coal production under Mission Coking Coal.”

It is noteworthy that under the leadership of CMD Nilendu Kumar Singh, CCL is actively pursuing the establishment of four additional coal washeries to further augment its beneficiation capacity
