Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s brother Manohar Singh today announced to contest against the official Congress candidate from Bassi Pathana assembly constituency.

He was eyeing a Congress ticket from the constituency but the party high command decided to field its sitting legislator. In the first list of 86 candidates, the Congress on Saturday gave the ticket to party MLA Gurpreet Singh GP from Bassi Pathana (SC) seat.

Manohar Singh termed it as “injustice” with the people of the constituency and alleged that the sitting legislator was “incapable and ineffective”.

He said he would contest the election as independent candidate as prominent personalities in the constituency wanted it. “There is no chance of going back and I will fight the polls,” Manohar Singh added.

An MBBS and MD, Manohar Singh had resigned as a senior medical officer from Kharar civil hospital in August last year. He also holds a postgraduate degree in journalism and has also studied law.

He said he took the decision of contesting as an independent after meeting several councillors, village sarpanch and panch.
