Raipur, January 4

An Air India flight from Mumbai failed to land at Raipur airport due to low visibility and was diverted to Nagpur on Wednesday afternoon.

The AI-651 flight took off from Mumbai at 9.50 am and was supposed to touch down at Swami Vivekanand airport in Raipur at 11.45 am. Following inclement weather, dense fog enveloped the area in and around the airport.

The flight was bound to Visakhapatnam from Raipur and to Mumbai.

Following low visibility as per the standard landing procedure, the airport authorities did not permit the aircraft to land. Sensing the climate condition to continue, the authorities decided to divert the aircraft to Nagpur.

The flight and passengers are stranded at Nagpur airport. Officials said once the weather was clear, the flight would be allowed to land at Raipur.

A few routine flights are also scheduled to arrive later in the afternoon. According to officials, if the weather condition remains the same, the flights will be diverted to nearest airports.

The Meteorological Centre Raipur has predicted that the weather condition in the state capital of Chhattisgarh would remain rough for another five days.
