Bilaspur police in Chhattisgarh has evinced how an effective campaign can facilitate controlling crime!
Nijaat, an anti-drug and liquor campaign, initiated by Bilaspur Superintendent of Police Santosh Singh has notched desired results in controlling crime. In the six months of the campaign, the crimes under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) have come down by 11 percent besides sharp decline in the number of road accidents compared to previous year.
According to data released by the Bilaspur police, the incidents of thrashing were reduced by 11 per cent, attempt to murder by 70 per cent, murder by 35 per cent, stabbing by 78 per cent, molestation by 38 per cent and theft by 19 per cent. Under the NDPS and Excise act, 3106 persons were arrested in a total of 2668 cases, in which 424 accused went to jail in non-bailable cases.
Bilaspur Superintendent of Police Santosh Singh said that the campaign managed to put a brake on the ever-increasing rate of road accidents while a total of 2955 persons were arrested in 2849 cases of Excise and 151 accused in 119 cases of NDPS. Drugs worth over Rs 1.09 crore were seized.
Among the people arrested in Excise, a large number of people involved in hooliganism by consuming liquor in public places and a total of 11797 liters of illicit liquor were seized. In NDPS cases, 749 kg of ganja and other intoxicants have been seized.
Singh said the campaign launched by the police unleashed panic among the criminals. Action was taken against 608 people under the Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 or COTPA. 974 people fell into the police net while driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and action was initiated under the motor vehicle act. Each matter was sent to the court and a heavy fine of Rs 10,000 was imposed on each offender.
A total of 2022 programs were organized in schools, colleges and public places with the help of people under public awareness against drugs. Identifying hundreds of addicted people, counselling was done in the police station with the help of various organizations that made a large number of addicts quit drugs and alcohol.
