Chhattisgarh follows Centre to cancel the High School Certificate Examination (Class X) and postpone the Higher Secondary School Certificate Examination (Class XII) for the academic year 2020-21 following surge in COVID-19 cases in the state.
Chhattisgarh Board of Secondary Education (CGBSE) Secretary Prof V K Goyal issued a notification in this regard, stating that the decision was taken in wake of COVID-19 crisis. The Class X examination was due to start from April 15, 2021 but was suspended following lockdown coming into effect in almost all districts in the state. The exam now stands cancelled.
The notification further states that the marks will be allocated to the Class X students on the basis of assignment issued by the Board. If any student has not done the assignments or have not achieved minimum passing marks in the assignment, such students will be given Minimum Passing Marks for Class X. If any student or students are not satisfied with the allotted marks, such students will be permitted to appear in Grade/Division Upgrading examination, once the COVID-19 pandemic is controlled.
The CGBSE Secretary in his notification further added that the Higher Secondary School Certificate Examination (Class XII) scheduled to commence from May 3, 2021, has been suspended for the time being. Fresh examination schedule (time-table) will be released once the COVID-19 situation improves and comes under control.
It may be recalled that the Chhattisgarh Board of Secondary Education was all set to conduct the High School Certificate Examination, 2020-21 (Class X) from April 15, 2021, which would have concluded on May 1, 2021 and the Higher Secondary School Certificate Examination (Class XII), 2020-21 from May 3, 2021, which would have concluded on May 24, 2021. As per registration with the CGBSE, 4,61,000 students had registered for High School Certificate Examination (Class X) and 2,87,000 students have registered for the Higher Secondary School Certificate Examination (Class XII).
Chhattisgarh School Education Minister Dr Premsai Singh Tekam said the decision was taken keeping in view the present COVID-19 situation and the safety of children who would be appearing for this examination. The CBSE had already cancelled Class X examination and suspended Class XII examination. Similarly, many states had also followed the suit, he added.
