Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has welcomed the decision of the Centre on caste census.
The Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs chaired by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi on Wednesday decided to include caste enumeration in the upcoming census.
“The successful Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has decided to include the census of castes in the upcoming census. The decision is commendable from the point of view of social harmony and all-round development of the country,” Sai said.
The Congress Party has always opposed caste census since independence, he said, adding that Congress did not count castes in any census after independence. Even in the year 2010, most of the political parties in the then Congress-led UPA government agreed on caste census, but Congress did not allow it to happen even then. Even now it was only trying to serve its political interests by making the castes fight among themselves.
Census is a central subject, but many states have done the census of castes through surveys. In many states, this has been done in a completely political manner. Such surveys have damaged the harmony of the society.
Sai said under such circumstances, it was a historic decision to include the census of castes through the census to strengthen the social fabric. The people of Chhattisgarh welcome this important decision. “On behalf of 3 crore people of the state, we express our heartfelt gratitude to the respected Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi,” the Chief Minister said.
