A jawan of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself in Chhattisgarh’s restive Dantewada district on last night.

The victim has been identified as Gunin Das, a native of Assam. He was posted in the 195th battalion of the CRPF that was deployed in Dantewada for the anti-Maoist operation.

Sources said Das had returned to the camp yesterday after leave. Soon after reporting for duty, the jawan shot himself with the service rifle. The burst of fire created panic in the camp as the pocket is hyper sensitive due to Maoists movement.

The jawans in the camp came on alert mode and rushed towards the place from where the firing sound came. They spotted Das in a pool of blood.

He was rushed to the government hospital as he had a pulse. As his condition deteriorated, Das was rushed to Raipur in a critical condition. He however succumbed on the way.

The senior police officials and CRPF reached the spot and inspected the scene of crime to collect first-hand information. Police have registered an offence and started the probe to ascertain the cause that led the jawan to take a drastic step of ending life.
