Chhattisgarh declares 7-day state mourning to honour Manmohan Singh

The Chhattisgarh government has decided that seven days of state mourning will be observed throughout the state as a mark of respect to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

It will be effective from December 26, the day Manmohan Singh passed away at AIIMS, New Delhi. The state mourning will be effective till January 1, a notification issued by the state government said.

During the period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast throughout the state wherever it is regularly flown. There will be no official entertainment during the period of state mourning, the notification said.

The Central government has also declared seven days of mourning. It has also been decided that a state funeral will be accorded to Manmohan Singh. The National Flag shall also be flown at half-mast on the day of the funeral at all Indian Missions and High Commissions abroad.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai paid rich tributes to the former Prime Minister. In an X post, he said: “The news of the demise of former Prime Minister and eminent economist Dr Manmohan Singh is extremely sad.”

Manmohan Singh was one of those giants of economics who held important positions like Finance Minister of the country, Governor of Reserve Bank of India and Head of Planning Commission, he said.

“My condolences are with the bereaved family. I pray to God for peace for the departed soul and to provide strength to the bereaved family and their well-wishers,” the Chief Minister said.
