Chhattisgarh’s Kanger Valley National Park, which is famous both at home and abroad for its amazing natural beauty, rich biodiversity and world-renowned tourist destinations, has added another feather to its cap.
In the series, another unique natural topography has come to light in the Kanger Valley located in Bastar district of Chhattisgarh that has been named “Green Cave”. “It is located in compartment number 85 of Kotumsar campus and It is planned to open the cave for tourists soon after the necessary preparations are completed by the forest department,” Chhattisgarh’s forest minister Kedar Kashyap said.
Green colored microbial layers are found on the limestone structures (stalactites) hanging from the walls and ceiling of the cave, due to which it has been given the name “Green Cave”, Kashyap said. The cave made of limestone and rock is considered to be one of the rare and unique caves of the Kanger Valley.
The way to reach the green cave passes through large stones. Green walls covered with microbial deposits attract tourists as they enter the cave. On proceeding further, a huge chamber is visible, from where bright and huge stalactites and flow-stones can be seen on the inside, which further enhances the natural grandeur of the cave. The biggest specialty of the Green Cave is that it is green and apart from this, it is the only cave in Bastar where there is light in the afternoon.

Located in the middle of dense forests, the cave is going to become a new attraction for tourists due to its unique structure and natural beauty. The security of the cave is being regularly monitored by the Forest Department. Also, keeping in mind the convenience of tourists, the development of access roads, footpaths and other necessary infrastructure is in progress. Continuous efforts are being made by the Forest Department for tourism development of Kanger Valley National Park.
A senior forest official said under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and the directives of Forest and Climate Change Minister Kedar Kashyap, special priority is being given to conservation and conservation of tourism and wildlife heritage by the state government.
Forest Kashyap has asserted that the inclusion of green cave in the tourism map will give a new dimension to tourism in Kanger Valley National Park, which will increase local employment opportunities and speed up regional development and soon tourists will be able to experience the natural beauty of this wonderful cave.
The cave is located in the campus of Kotumsar Cave, which is a limestone cave located near Jagdalpur in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. It is situated on the Kanger limestone belt close to the bank of the Kanger River and lies within Kanger Valley National Park. The cave contains a main tunnel of approximately 200 metres with several lateral and downward passages. It is the longest cave present in the Indian subcontinent.
