In the last seven months of imposing a special “special corona fee” on liquor, the Chhattisgarh government has earned over Rs 141 crore from the cess.

The state government, in its notification dated May 15, 2020, had imposed a 10 per cent “special corona fee” on the foreign liquor.

“Chhattisgarh has earned over Rs 141 crore from the special cess in the last seven months,” sources in the excise department said. The highest came in the month of November with the collection of Rs 26 crore.

The special cess, as of November 30, 2020, has been deposited in the state exchequer by the Chhattisgarh state marketing corporation limited.

The state government is expecting more in the coming days. The special fee had generated additional revenue for the state though the cess was nominal. The Delhi government had also imposed similar cess but was hefty 70 per cent. It was later lifted.

The state has 337 country liquor shops and 321 foreign liquor shops. In the budget 2020-21, Chhattisgarh government had estimated Rs 5200 from state excise duty that would be about 6.2 per cent of the revenue receipts for the current fiscal.
