Union Minister for Home Amit Shah said efforts were on to free the country from the menace of Naxalism before the 2024 general elections.
The action taken by the Narendra Modi government has brought the Naxal menace on the verge of eradication as the territory under their influence had shrunk considerably, Shah said while addressing a public meeting in Korba—about 210 km from the Chhattisgarh capital—on Saturday afternoon. The Union Home Minister said the Naxal incident had also come down sharply across the country.
The country reported 2258 Naxal incidents in 2009 that had reduced to 519 in 2021, Shah said, adding that the policy of the Centre over Naxalism had given the desired results. The Narendra Modi government accelerated development works in the Naxal-infested pockets that provided job opportunities for the youth, it dealt with firm hands against those taking up the weapons, the Minister added.
Shah said the Congress party always talked about the backward class but never took any initiative for its welfare. The BJP government constituted the national commission for the backward classes and provided constitutional power to the backward communities, he said. Even the government ensured reservation for backward classes in prominent educational institutions, Shah said.
“I wish to ask Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel what he or his party has done for the tribals,” Shah said. The Congress remained in power for a long time right from the Constitutional came into force but never nominated a tribal to the post of Indian President that BJP did, he added.
