Four members of a family were feared killed when the car they were travelling in plunged into a mine in Chhattisgarh’s Bilaigarh-Sarangarh district on Friday.

The stone mine was reportedly abandoned and filled with water. A girl on board had a miraculous escape as she evacuated from the vehicle and swam to the shore.

According to police sources, Mahendra Patel, Sarpanch of Timralga village, was returning from Odisha with his parents, wife and 15-year-old daughter. Five persons were on board the ill-fated vehicle.

A few kilometers ahead of the village, they stopped to attend nature’s call. Mahendra, who was reportedly on the wheels, was reversing the vehicle and lost control over the steering. The car skipped into the mine.

The passerby informed the matter to the police who rushed to the spot and started the rescue operation. The girl, who escaped the mishap, had sustained minor injuries.

Sources said one body was recovered while search was on for the other three, who were feared dead in the accident.
