Chhattisgarh: Gauthans on self-sufficient strive

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said more and more Gauthans were becoming self-sufficient that underlined the success of state government’s flagship Godhan Nyay Yojana.

Under the scheme, the state government had set up Gauthans, the livestock shed that is emerging as a centre for livelihood of villagers. It has become the focus of boosting the rural economy with a number of activities including procuring cow-dung.

“Gauthans procuring cow dung from their own resources is a major achievement under Godhan Nyay Yojana”, said Bhupesh Baghel. More and more gauthans in rural areas of Chhattisgarh are becoming self-sufficient and procuring cow dung from their own capital, he said, adding that they do not require funding from the State Government anymore.

Under Godhan Nyay Yojana, Rs 376 crore 50 lakh has been paid to the beneficiaries so far. Availing the benefits of the scheme, three women members of Pragati Mahila Self-Help Group of Majhgava Gauthan in Baikunthpur development block, Koriya district have become financially empowered by practicing backyard farming. They have become a source of inspiration for other women of the village.

The president of the self-help group, Shamshun Nisha, said that since the formation of the group, she has been associated with various economic activities in Gauthan. She informed that at present, there are 10 members in the group, out of which 03 women members are practicing backyard farming in the Gauthan. Anjulata, secretary of the group, said that earlier women used to plant vegetables on a small scale in their homes, but after the formation of the self-help group, women have got the opportunity to produce vegetables on a large scale in the Gauthan.

They are earning good profits from vegetable farming. She further informed that for the last 5 months they have been doing the work of Bari development, which they started with Rs 25,000. Presently, they have planted peas, brinjal, radish, potato and other vegetables in the Bari of the Gauthan. Women members of the group have made a net profit of up to Rs 45,000 so far by selling the vegetables in the local market, and the amount of this profit is increasing continuously. Women members said that ever since they started doing this work, they have been able to support their families and have become financially empowered.

In the year 2022-23, under Narva Garua Ghuruva Bari Yojana, 98690 baris have been developed. Presently, there are 4429 communities ‘Bari’ with 39090 beneficiaries in 8408 Gauthans of the state. It is noteworthy that Chhattisgarh Government’s ambitious schemes Narva, Garwa, Ghurwa and Bari and Godhan Nyaya Yojana are proving to be extremely beneficial for the common people. For the people living in rural areas of the state, this scheme has emerged as a medium of economic growth. Under the scheme, women of self-help groups in Gauthans of the district are becoming self-sufficient by joining various livelihood activities including vegetable production.
