Raipur, October 18
An Indian Police Service (IPS) officer in Chhattisgarh had again hogged the headlines, this time for brutally bashing up his official driver.
The 2015-batch IPS officer is posted in Bastar region and has been in news for all bad reasons. For an incident that took place in 2018 while he was Superintendent of Police in a district, the High Court had ordered an offence against him. He was charged with directing the cops to thrash a crowd led by a local legislator that gathered at the police station in connection with a case of alleged molestation of a lady national player.
However, the officer got a breather from the Supreme Court.
In a fresh controversy, the officer had been charged for brutally beating up a police constable who was posted at his residence as driver. The dispute was reported to be regarding cleaning the vehicle.
Sources said the driver received serious injuries and was rushed to the government hospital. After examining the patient, the doctors advised for an admission as he required advanced medical care.
As the report spilled out, the leaders of Adivasi Sarva Samaj swung into action and rushed to the hospital. Senior leader and Member of Parliament Sohan Potai demanded immediate removal of the officer and a case be registered against the atrocity act.
The police officer had denied having manhandled the staff.
The Chief Minister, Bhupesh Baghel has ordered an investigation into the matter. The Inspector General of Police (Bastar), Sunderraj P had been asked to probe. The incident took place on the day Baghel was on a Bastar tour.
