A five-member inter-state gang allegedly smuggling ganja from Odisha in Chhattisgarh was arrested by the Dug police on Thursday.
Acting on a tip off, the team of Durg police raided a place at Khursipaar in Bhilai and nabbed two persons guarding the consignment of ganja. They two were identified as Pintu Kumar Sahni and G Sarojni. On interrogation, they revealed that they were getting the consignment of illegal narcotics from Odisha.
Further quizzing provided more information to the interrogators to establish for the first time the forward and backward link of the smugglers. Based on the information, the police apprehended A B Sahni and Ajay Sahni.
Durg Inspector General of Police Ram Gopal Garg and Superintendent of Police Jitendra Shukla, on whose direction the operation was conducted, told reporters that A B Sahni and Ajay Sahni used their luxury Skoda car bearing registration number CG 04 KP 4604 was used to transport narcotics from Odisha. The duo used to change the number plate to accomplish the crime, the officials added.
Another accused, identified as Ajay Prasad, was also using luxury Volkswagen car bearing registration number CG 04 HC 2080, to supply the narcotics. A huge quantity of ganja was recovered from the vehicle.
The officials said a total 45.145 kg ganja was seized from the custody of five accused. The market value of the seized narcotics is Rs 4.5 lakh. The police arrested the five accused under relevant sections of the NDPS acts and produced them before the local court of law.
Besides two cars, one Pulsar motor cycle with registration No. CG 07 AJ 6067 was also seized.
The crackdown came following direction from Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, who had asked the Chhattisgarh police to take stringent action against the drug peddlers.
