Raipur, September 6
Chhattisgarh government has decided to extend the period of policy formulated in 2012 to promote small hydro power (SHP) projects in the state.
The policy expired in February 2022. “The state cabinet today approved the proposal to extend the period of the policy for another 10 years,” Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said after the cabinet meeting held today at his residential office. The policy promotes to develop SHP projects up to 25 MW capacities.
SHP projects can play a critical role in improving the overall energy scenario of the country and, in particular, for remote and inaccessible areas. Most of the potential is in the Himalayan States as river-based projects and in other States on irrigation canals.
Chhattisgarh has an identified potential of about 1200 MW in the SHP.
The mineral-rich state would also formulate a policy to promote entailing investment in the hydro-electric projects based on pump storage. Pumped storage hydropower (PSH) is a type of hydroelectric energy storage. It is a configuration of two water reservoirs at different elevations that can generate power as water moves down from one to the other (discharge), passing through a turbine.
The state cabinet today approved the Chhattisgarh State Hydro-Electric Project (based on pump storage) Establishment Policy 2022. It would be notifies soon.
The other significant decisions taken in the cabinet meeting included organising Chhattisgarh Olympic and setting up separate departments for Scheduled Tribe, Scheduled Caste and Other Backward Community for effective monitoring of schemes.
