The Chhattisgarh bandh called by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) in protest against the brutal killing of a youth by the members of a minority community in Biranpur of Bemetara district evoked massive response.
Following communal clashes linked to the incidents of Love Jihad in the village, about 70 km from the state capital, 23-year-old Bhuneshwar Sahu was brutally killed by the members of Muslim community. The incident shocked the entire state and the VHP called for a state-wide bandh in protest against the incident.
According to reports reaching from different parts of Chhattisgarh, the bandh received massive response in most of the pockets. In the state capital, the bandh was total as shops and business establishments put down the shutters. Even petrol pumps and many educational institutions remained closed.
In the entire Bastar division, the bandh was spontaneous as people and traders responded to the call. In Bilaspur division, the bandh received mixed response, however, it was total in other parts of the state. Reports reaching from Sarguja, Korba and Raigarh also said the bandh call received massive response.
The bandh supporters came out on the streets and appealed to the traders to support the call. No major untoward incident had been reported from any part of the state. However, stray incidents had been reported in a few places.
