A four-member inspection team of the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) of Chhattisgarh conducted the inspection of the skin bank established in the Advanced Burn Care Department of the Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital and Research Center, Sector-9. This team examined the necessary documents and equipment for starting a skin bank in the hospital of Bhilai Steel Plant. Satisfied with the availability of necessary equipment, necessary documents and trained medical staff, the team from Raipur gave permission to start the skin bank.
Along with giving permission to start Skin Bank, a registration number has been issued from SOTTO, Raipur which will be valid for 5 years. Thus, the skin bank established in the main hospital of BSP has become the first Skin bank of Chhattisgarh. With its establishment, BSP Hospital has started the work of making people aware about skin donation, so that people make skin donations to the skin bank and contribute in saving the lives of serious patients.
Dr. Uday Kumar, Additional CMO of Burn Unit said that in the coming time, BSP’s skin bank will prove to be a boon for severely burnt patients. With this skin bank, patients with severe burns will get a new life. Only after the consent of the patient or their relatives, the upper layer of the skin of the patient’s leg or back is removed through an electrical dermatome and proper bandage is done at the removed area, taking the removed skin in 50 percent glycerol and incubator in the skin bank. After the report of the necessary test is received, small holes are made on the skin by the skin manor in the biosafety cabinet, so that the glycerol and antibiotic solution can penetrate into it and there is no infection in the skin. After this process, a proper label with name registration number is stored in the freezer at 85 percent glycerol; this skin is stored at 4 degrees for about 5 years.
